Alligators, tigers, and snakes…oh my! If the exotic and thrilling is what you seek this vacation, head on over to Alligator Adventure in Myrtle Beach for the chance to come up close with some creatures you only see on television or read about in books. Located in a natural swamp and marsh setting next to Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Alligator Adventure is one of the most exciting attractions on the Grand Strand. With more than eight hundred alligators, numerous snakes, frogs, and lizards, it is no wonder this attraction calls itself “The Reptile Capital of the World.” For those who shy away from the creepy, toothy, and the crawly, don’t worry… there are many other amazing creatures to see and learn about.
The main star of Alligator Adventure is, of course, the alligators. Visitors will get the opportunity to view tiny, baby gators measuring only eight inches long to mature adult gators almost fifteen feet in length and weighing anywhere from five hundred to one thousand pounds! Lecturers are standing by the main alligator pool to give talks explaining the amazing history of these creatures and to display their skills feeding them by hand. You’ll also have an opportunity to see rare albino alligators…you have to see them to believe it! The alligators’ close friends the crocodiles, will also be in attendance and visitors will gawk at Utan, King of the Crocs, the largest crocodile in the United States measuring more than twenty feet long! Stay away from those teeth
Serpentarium
In the Serpentarium, you can view exotic snakes such as the Green Anaconda, the world’s largest snake which can grow almost forty feet in length! King Cobras, Reticulated Pythons, and other species are on display. Many other rare species of reptiles find their home at Alligator Adventure including Gila Monsters, African Bullfrogs, and the Pig-nosed Turtle. If you like tortoises, be sure to go see the Galapagos Tortoises, which handlers describe as “giant puppies with shells.” Galapagos Tortoises come all the way from Galapagos Island and can weigh close to seven hundred pounds. You’ll be put in a Halloween kind of mood when you visit the Egyptian Fruit bats and watch them swarm. These bats typically hang out in groups of thousands and really do eat fruit!
If alligators, lizards, and bats aren’t your thing, then check out the other special inhabitants of Alligator Adventure. Watch Siberian Tigers and Caracals lounge and play under the Carolina Sun. Get an exclusive chance to view North American Bobcats, rarely ever spotted in the wild by humans. Don’t let their cat-like appearance fool you. These are fierce predators that can be twice the size of the average housecat and weigh five times as much. If you prefer cute critters, come view the playful river otters which are also fantastic swimmers or the ring-tailed lemurs. Did you know that the ring-tailed leaders are ruled by a female leader considered the queen? Now that’s what I call girl power! Alligator Adventure is also home to more than twenty species of exotic birds scattered all over the attraction. Toucans, Macaws, Cockatoos, Hornbills and more will dazzle you with their grace and colorful plumage.
